People were shocked at the Pokken communities support of their game during the EVO Charity Vote. Thousands of dollars were raised in hopes that Pokken would edge out Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the final spot at the Evolution Championship series, and while it was a hard fought battle, Marvel’s fanbase showed the strength of a community that had been fighting to keep their game relevant for six years, and edged out over the Pokemon companies fighting game. Still, Pokken players weren’t left walking away empty handed. Pokken was promised to be given 10,000 dollars, in a pledge made by EVO, ensuring that prize pools were higher for the game, something that the community could definitely use.

It would appear that the first bit of that money is making it’s way to the North California Regionals. 1,000 dollars, one tenth of the money in total that EVO pledged to use to help increase the payout for Pokkens tournaments, will be added to the prize pool for the game at NCR, and while, next to say, Street Fighter, that’s not a heck of a lot, it’s still a pretty big reason for people to check out the game, aside from it being at a Capcom premier event, which will likely draw a pretty big crowd anyway.

Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cellular, has opened the floodgates for other Pokken tournaments to ask for some of that sweet, sweet pledge money as well, telling them to “Let him know” on his twitter page. Only time will tell if this will breathe some new life into the Pokken scene, and create new interest in the, oftentimes sidelined, arena fighter, but it certainly seems like a reasonable assumption that it might. Money does make the world, even the competitive world, turn.

The North California Regionals will take place in Sacramento, California on April 14-16th and will feature games from Street Fighter V to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
